Performance Pad and Rotor Brake Kits

When buying high-performance brakes, having the right pad and rotor combination is essential for optimizing performance. You need a combo that is able to work in tandem to provide the aggressive, safe and quiet level of braking required.

Quality manufacturers take the time to develop pads and rotors that work well together. Oftentimes, these manufacturers will group these products up into families or kits. This makes it easy for the customer to know which products work well together.

In this video, we took a look at the Raybestos Street Performance brake pads and rotors for a 2017 Corvette. This helps illustrate the benefits you get by kitting performance pads and rotors from a quality manufacturer.

Engineering

Manufacturers like Raybestos know that Performance brakes need to serve several purposes. They must be aggressive enough to take to autocross, but quiet enough to drive around on the street.

We take these factors into account when engineering our performance pads and rotors.

Performance Brake Pads

For the 2017 Corvette, there is a large pad-swept area on the front rotor. To account for this, Raybestos matches OEM specs by adding counterweights on the front pads to help control the harmonics and keep the braking quiet.

Performance Rotors

Raybestos Performance brake pads are extremely aggressive for a street performance pad. They are able to withstand heat cycles of up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit.

This allows the pad to be a street pad when it needs to be and a track pad when it needs to be.

The aggressiveness of the pad means you must pair it with a rotor that can handle the energy generated. Raybestos Performance rotors have several features that help accomplish this.

Enhanced Iron

Raybestos Performance rotors are made with application-specific enhanced iron, which suppresses noise and keeps brakes running cool, quiet and vibration-free.

S-Groove Rotor Slots

Depending on the application, Performance rotors may come with a patented S-Groove slot (D640,620), maximizing pad-to-rotor contact for:

  • Improved pedal feel
  • Stronger bite
  • Smoother braking
  • Increased pad life

Rotor Plate Thickness

Raybestos Performance rotors make sure that the rotor plate is thick enough to handle the energy generated by our Street Performance pads.

Testing Brake Performance

Raybestos extensively tests our Performance brake products to ensure they meet the highest quality standards. This includes benchmarking our products against the competition.

As you can see, Raybestos Performance friction outperforms the competition during high-temperature braking. The graph titled "Friction Effectiveness Test" shows our friction's performance at rotor temperatures generated during street and track driving. It doesn't matter if you are driving around town or on a cones course. Raybestos Performance pads deliver superior braking.

Not only do our pads perform better than the competition, they do so at a much quieter level. The graph on the right shows our friction staying in the "Very Quiet" noise range, a feature unique to Raybestos.

When you purchase Raybestos Performance brakes, you know what you are getting. You know the pads will have the bite you need. You know the rotors will be able to handle the heat generated. And you know the two work well together in tandem.

A Note About Burnishing

It is important to note that a proper burnishing or break-in procedure is critical to ensure the optimal performance of our Performance pad and rotor kit. The break-in process heat cycles the brake system, preparing the pads and rotors for the first time you use them in a track environment.

This burnishing process is more intensive than the bedding procedure you would follow for normal aftermarket brakes.

In Conclusion

We hope this article helps illustrate the importance of installing pads and rotors on your vehicle that are designed to work in tandem for optimal performance.

Many pads sold in the aftermarket as “performance pads” are not as aggressive as the Raybestos Performance Street line. In some cases, the aftermarket or lightweight rotor may not be able to properly withstand the energy and torque generated by the higher friction.

Likewise, if you use a Performance rotor with a regular aftermarket ceramic pad on your everyday vehicle, you will not be able to achieve the stopping power for which the rotor was designed.

When deciding to purchase brakes for your vehicle, you should carefully consider the benefits you can achieve by kitting a properly mated high-performance pad and rotor combo.
