Performance Cars: What Brakes Should You Put on them?

Many “car people” have the heart of a racer. We don't get to spend much time driving on an actual racetrack, though we do spend a lot of time at them. But we do like knowing that our street performance vehicle is capable of making the leap to autocross on a whim.

The big performance brake kits look great, but what should you load it with? Brake pads are not going to turn heads. No one is going to give you a thumbs up at the stoplight over your performance friction brakes.

When it comes to brake pads, finding a superior friction compound that is safe and reliable is what matters most. If you are basing your brand decision off a bumper sticker, you may be missing out. This is where you need to do your homework.

Performance Cars: What Brakes Should You Put on them?

Street or Track Brake Pads?

The first question you need to ask is, do I need Racing or Performance pads? To answer this question, you only need to answer one question. Do I drive my vehicle on the street? If the answer is yes, then you are in need of Performance brake pads.

In fact, Raybestos Professional Racing brake pads cannot run on the street. We design and engineer these pads for the extreme usage needed on a race track only. So, unless you are looking to find pads for your racing circuit, let's narrow the discussion to high-performance brake pads.

Improve Braking Performance

The XP7 compound is what we use in Raybestos Street Performance pads. This compound was developed by the same engineers that have formulated high-end, championship-winning track pads for the best teams in professional racing. This includes everything from grassroots motorsports, World Rally Championship, IndyCar and NASCAR.

Not surprisingly, these engineers all drive high-performance cars. So they know what is required in a Performance friction formulation. They used this experience to develop industry-leading, high-performance brakes that outperform the competition.

Unlike most common compounds in the aftermarket, our street brakes provide maximum braking torque. Our brake pads stay effective throughout operating temperatures of up to 1250 degrees Fahrenheit.

As you can see in the graph below, our friction is the most effective pad at the rotor temperatures generated during street and autocross track driving. This makes our pads the ideal option for taking your street car to light autocross track driving without having to change pads.

The result is an easy to drive, quiet, street pad with enough stopping power for anything you can throw at it. You may never hit 1200 degrees on your rotors, but the pads can take it if your heart tells you to.
